MegaHobby Expo 2011 Event Report (More Pain in a Nutshell)

Alter Panty from "Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt"

Some companies just had a another exhibition of upcoming figures at the recently concluded MegaHobby Expo 2011 and from what they’ve presented so far, 2012 is bound to be a very expensive year for collectors due to the sheer number of anticipated figures to be released. A lot of the figures here are from my favorite manufacturer, Alter, while some are from Kotobukiya. I once wrote off that Alter was losing its touch with the lackluster releases of months past, but with the lineup they’ve presented here, I’m glad to say that they’re back on top of their game and we should be seeing even better things from them soon. Quick Review: Phat Company Yakumo Yukari

Phat Company 1/8 Scaled Figure: Yakumo Yukari

Hey there, Murakami Night here! Felt like forever since I last posted something here :3 And so, today, I bring you another “short” review of one of those scaled figures that I would call a masterpiece. And it’s none other than the Youkai of Boundaries, Yakumo Yukari, who coincidentally happens to be my main in the game Imperishable Night and my very first scaled figure from Touhou Project! XD

The figure also happens to be sculpted by my favorite, YOSHI, who also did my favorite Miku figure above all that I have and also the one who did that Gokokuden Marisa which I’m searching high and low just to get it. Anyway, enough fanboying for me and time to start the review! Continue reading

Volunteer Your Figures for the Ozine Fest Anime Figure Special Display!!! (Our Biggest, Grandest and Best One Yet!)

In one month, Team Onii-chan! will be having its greatest event ever (I know I said our AME Monogatari one was but this one’s even bigger) and as always, we will be having another display for all attendees to see and appreciate. However, unlike before where the display was segmented by toy line (scale figures, Nendoroids, articulated figures), for the Ozine Fest Anime Figure Special, we will be grouping figures according to popular series. This doesn’t mean that figures whose characters do not fall under the series mentioned below will be left out. In fact, we will be providing a separate area for those figures as well. The rationale behind grouping figures by series is that it helps people who are more familiar with the shows look at the figures since they’re all in a shared space, rather than having them scan the display by toy line. We believe that this set-up would cater best to the general public and not just toy collectors, which is really what the thrust of this convention is; to spread the joy of figure collecting not just to existing collectors, but to everyone.

Here are the different series and the slots for lending. As always, to lend your figure, just comment below this post with your name, contact details and the figure which you’ll be lending. Note that since lending will be on a per series basis, you have to state the toy line that the figure is from (e.g. Nendoroid) Continue reading

Hobby Japan January 2012 Scans (Max Factory Luka WOOT!!!)

The latest scans from Japan’s highly respected hobby magazine, Hobby Japan, have just come out and as usual, oodles of new figures to look forward to are once again in the spotlight. This issue seems to be much more interesting than the last two were, particularly due to the presence of very recognizable characters most otaku identify with.

Excessively Busty Seikon no Quaser II Tomo Yamanobe Figure Up For Grabs!

For the benefit of keeping this blog “General” rated, I will no longer explain what Seikon no Quaser is and advice that you rather check out the “milky” yourself. Of course, the featured figure itself is already self-explanatory based on the title’s uniquely played plot. With A+ deciding to scale this figure at 1/4.5, I’m pretty sure you’ll get your hands full of its bouncy goodness :D Continue reading

Alter and GSC Team Up for Gumako Figure, Part of Cheerful Japan! Effort

Gumako, for those who don’t know her, is Good Smile Company’s mascot, and being their flag bearer, it wouldn’t be surprising to see a scale figure of hers’ made as seen above. However, what makes this 1/8 scale figure even more interesting is that despite being GSC’s character, it’s actually made by Alter. In an unprecedented move, the two rival companies are working together this time for the Cheerful Japan! campaign. Continue reading

Phat! Company’s Totori is Detail Overload, Grab One Now!

Phat! Company has been a relatively minor player in the figure industry but that doesn’t mean they don’t do great stuff, in fact far from it, as can be seen in their latest scale figure offering of “Atelier Totori’s” titular character, Totori. Continue reading

Nendoroid Morishima Haruka Teases Your Wallet, Open to Knee Kisses

With “Amagami SS” receiving a second season due to popular demand, Good Smile Company is taking advantage of this by releasing its first ever “Amagami” Nendoroid. Of course, being the poster girl of the franchise, Morishima Haruka, is the first one to herald this new Nendoroid series. Continue reading

“Street Fighter 4 Volt” On Sale at the App Store for $0.99, iOS Peeps Get Downloading

Almost everyone’s on a Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 craze right now and rightfully so, as the game looks stunning and brimming with everything that gamers love about the franchise, but unfortunately it’s console-bound so unless you’re lugging around your PS3 with you, you can’t play it outside your home. Luckily, Capcom’s heard your pleas for a handheld dose of virtual violence and has dropped the price of its highly acclaimed fighting game, “Street Fighter 4 Volt,” to a delectable $0.99. Yes, for just roughly Php 45.00, you can enjoy one of the best fighting games (if not the best) on a handheld device ever. I’ve personally played the game and it’s quite amazing how responsive it is for a touch-based fighter. What’s even better is that if you’ve got a friend who also has the game on his iOS device, you can play with him over Bluetooth or WiFi for bragging rights over who’s got the better gaming chops.  Unfortunately, the game’s only on iOS so if you’re wielding one of those smexy iPhones, iPod Touches or iPads, head on to the App Store and download the 400 mb game quickly before the sale is over. If I remember right, the game normally retails for $4.99 so the price drop really is a sweet deal already. It’s quite rare for full-fledged console-quality games on the App Store to have these kinds of price drops so take advantage of it while you still can. Also, the purchase is one time only so future updates to the game (if you’ve downloaded it) are free. For the Android or PSP hopefuls, sorry but it looks like you’re in tough luck for this one.

Team Onii-chan to Co-Present Ozine Fest Anime Figure Special!!!

Team Onii-chan Figure Display Crew has had a long standing and fruitful relationship with Otakuzine and its management ever since its inception and this will only continue to get stronger as time goes by. Perhaps no other proof of this so far will be greater than our super year-ender special event, of which Team Onii-chan will be co-presenting with Ozine for the very first anime figure centered convention in the Philippines. If you’re familiar with Wonder Festival in Japan, then the Ozine Fest Anime Figure Special, which will be held on December 28-29, 2011 at the SM Megamall Megatrade Hall 1, will be something similar to that. Being co-presenters, we will be much more involved with this event more than any of the past ones we’ve attended.

Of course, there will be a figure display, which I might add, is bound to be the biggest and grandest collection of anime figures and toys ever assembled yet. But more than a figure display, there will also be a lot of other activities related to the anime figure collecting fandom that should prove to be interesting for the entire spectrum of otaku in the Philippines. Our team is currently in the process of planning with Ozine management for this huge event. Being the first of its kind in the country, we are very honored and blessed that Ozine has decided to grant us this great opportunity to spread the wonders of Japanese figure collecting to everyone. We’ll keep you up-to-date with the latest happenings here on the blog so just keep checking for regular updates. :)

Sayaka Miki Joins the “Madoka Magica” Nendoroid Line, Has 8 Swords to Skewer Your Pre-order List

Due to the surge of activity we’ve had this past week, we’ve fallen behind somewhat on the latest figure news, but not to worry, we’re back on track. Besides the Tomoe Mami scale figure announced last week, another “Puella Magi Madoka Magica” figure has turned up for pre-orders which should also prove to be quite popular. The azure sword-wielder Sayaka Miki is the latest mahou shoujo to be included in the ever growing line of Nendoroids from GSC. Continue reading

Promoting the Team Onii-chan Booth at AME Monogatari is SRS BZNZ

Everyone’s still knocked out cold after our AME Monogatari display yesterday at the World Trade Center (including me) so I’ll do the post-display obligatory post later. Meanwhile, feast your eyes on a highly competitive wrestling match between our sensei, Ash, and GK master, Paul. This should whet your appetite for blood lust (ok, maybe not) before the fight later between Pacquiao and Marquez. Anyways, it’s back to the bed for me. To everyone who went to our display yesterday, thank you very much. We hope to see you soon (sooner than you think).

Thanks to Jed for the video.

GSC Tomoe Mami Struts Her Guns (and Saimoe Title) to Your Figure Shelf

Saimoe 2011 champion and leading proponent of physically gifted mahou shoujo, Tomoe Mami, is now joining the ranks of Good Smile Company’s scale figure lineup, along with the previously announced Kaname Madoka and Akemi Homura of “Puella Magi Madoka Magica” fame. Continue reading

“Madoka Magica” Trilogy Films Confirmed, All Hail the Goddess!!!

Newtype magazine just revealed that there would be a new “Fate/Zero” project in the works, but an even bigger announcement from the respected source is that there will be a trilogy of films for the blockbuster mahou shoujo anime, “Puella Magi Madoka Magica.” Continue reading

New “Fate/Zero” Project to be Announced, Please Make it a Movie!!!

Despite my apparent disdain for the Saber figure rehashes and overpopulated releases by figure companies, I must admit that I’m currently hooked to watching “Fate/Zero” and while there’s a number of really really great anime this season (more than my fingers could count actually), “Fate/Zero’s” right up there with the best of them. This is probably why I’m stoked about the recent news that apart from the excellent anime showing now, there’s going to be another project in store for it, which will be revealed later this week on Kadokawa Shoten’s Monthly Newtype magazine. I’m guessing this will be a movie at best; maybe make the climactic final battle into one serious balls-to-the-wall gift to the fans of the franchise. Now that would be something to behold considering the 4th Grail War is in my opinion, much more epic in scale than the somewhat more muted 5th one (case in point: Kiritsugu just owns Shiro), but hey at this point, anything Urobuchi throws at us, I’m all for it.

Oh, right. In case you didn’t know, the current “Fate/Zero” TV anime will be split into two parts, with the second part to be aired in April next year; kinda’ like how Sunrise did it with “Geass” and “Gundam OO.”

Reminders for Team Onii-chan’s AME Monogatari Figure Display

After more than a month of opening display slots for our AME Monogatari display on November 12, we’ve now closed the lending of figures for the said event. To all those who’ve volunteered to lend their precious figures, thank you and we hope you’ll continue to be a part of our future displays as well. Anyways, I just came back from the AME Monogatari meeting earlier and here’s some important reminders (and revelations) for our Team Onii-chan! members and to those who will hopefully be visiting our grand display at AME Monogatari.

NOTE: AME Monogatari will be held at Hall D of the World Trade Center in Pasay.

1. Ingress will be on the day of the event itself at 8 am. The event will start at 11 am so all those who will be lending figures are asked to arrive before the starting time.

2. The display booth will be a 6 ft by 6 ft area and will have 8 tables. We will be allowed to arrange them as we see fit as long as they do not go beyond the allocated space for us.

3. No exact number of passes have been given yet, but most likely it will be at least 5 with a good possibility that more will be given.

4. Entrance for those attending the ingress will be at the back of Hall D. The front and side entrances won’t be open until the events starts at 11 am.

5. Egress will start at 8 pm or if the organizers allow, a bit earlier than that (around 7:30 pm). If you absolutely need to leave earlier than that, please inform any of the Team Onii-chan! admins before doing so.

6. Much like our epic stint at Collecticon 2011, we will be having another presentation! (Prepare for hijinks and the unexpected) The presentation will be at 2 pm to 2:30 pm. We are inviting all those who will be visiting our display to attend our short presentation on figures as well. Seats for the presentation are limited to 40 people only.

That’s all the reminders you need to know for our AME Monogatari display. Whether you’re a lender, part of the crew or an event goer, we hope you take the time to visit us and see our lineup of figures. If you have any questions or inquiries about what Team Onii-chan! is, our friendly members will be sure to help you with them. We hope to see you at AME Monogatari on November 12 at the World Trade Center. :)
